Understanding the Basics of Wireless Home Security Systems

Wireless home security systems have increased in popularity because of the elimination of the existence of jumbled mass of wires, and because of the simple installation. If your home has been built with the wiring for a hard-wired home security system, you don’t have the jumbled mass of wires under foot. Since the majority of homeowners buy a home that was built several years ago, they do not have that luxury. Wireless home security system is the choice made by a number of new homeowners.

If you know how to plug in a phone and program your VCR or TV remote then you can install a wireless home security system. You will be able to save money on having the installation done by a professional. However, if it will make you feel more comfortable you can have a professional install the system for you.

Wireless home security systems will typically come with a system control panel, which is plugged into your phone line and a wall outlet. Some wireless home security systems work off of battery power only. The control panel will monitor all the information sent to it from the remotes. It will make necessary phone calls when motion is detected. With a wireless system you can hire the services of a monitoring company or you can elect to monitor the equipment yourself. To do this you will enter your phone number along with a few other phone numbers of trusted friends or family members. The control panel will call you. After listening to the noise going on in your house you will then determine whether or not to call for emergency services. This will help eliminate false alarm calls to the police, which can result in a fine.

So, how does the wireless home security system actually work? Security systems work because of an electric circuit attached to an entryway. A security system will work with one of two different types of circuit system, either the closed circuit system or the open circuit system. In either system when the circuit is broken the alarm will sound. Most alarm systems used the closed circuit system because an intruder can easily tamper with the open circuit system. The closed circuit system uses a magnetic sensor that uses very few components. The design requires:

• A battery powering circuit
• A spring propelled switch made of metal attached to a door frame.
• A magnet attached to the door even with the switch
• A buzzer powered on it own with an electromagnetic device (relay) switch.
• Closing the door causes the magnet to pull the metal switch shut or closed making the circuit complete. Opening the door causes the circuit break apart which causes the alarm to sound. As long as that circuit stays complete the alarm will not be triggered. Home security systems use the same type of closed circuit for the windows.

Another method the home security system might use takes a small button as the switch. The button must be implanted into the door or the doorframe. When the door shuts the button is pushed in and when the door is opened the button pops back out triggering the alarm.

A home security system also used motion detectors because the circuit system will not be efficient once the intruder is inside the home or building. Motion detectors work with microwave radio energy. The motion detector sends out a gust of radio energy and waits for it to come back. When the energy does not return, the sensor will send a signal that triggers the alarm system. Motion detectors can also use laser beams to detect motion. The laser beam is aimed to cross a pathway or doorway. If that beams is interrupted the alarm will be triggered and go off. However the most advanced motion detectors utilize a passive infrared sensors. These sensors can literally see the infrared energy given off by the intruder’s body. In the intruder’s movement around the room, he or she will cross the viewing area of one of these sensors and trigger the alarm.

When the alarm on a home security system has been triggered several events will occur. A loud noise sounding like a siren or another loud sound.
The outdoor lights will begin flashing.
The auto dialer will begin to dial the programmed numbers.

With all the noise and the lights flashing they are accomplishing three things.

They have made people in the house and neighbors know that the house has been broken into.
The intruder will flee the vicinity.
The police will know in an instant the location of the problem.

While all the alarms are making plenty of noise and the lights are flashing, the telephone dialer can dial the preprogrammed numbers.

It could be dialing the police and play the recorded message giving them the location of the house. The message will be repeated in case the machine has been placed on hold.

It could be dialing the Security Company that is responsible for the installation of the equipment. This is just in case there is information in the control panel that could be useful to the police regarding the intrusion.

Home security has become a fast growing business so new security systems are being tested all the time. Because home invasions have become more pervasive, homeowners are turning more and more to the home security systems for protection
